Near where I live there’s a 24-hour fast food restaurant (a Tim Hortons franchise) at one end of a bridge over the Gatineau River. I love this place, or, rather, I love the way people have laid claim to it. No one’s welcomed them. There are no picnic tables, and there’s not much grass. There hasn’t been so much as a nod by whoever built this place to the river right there, on the property’s edge, pouring out of the northern wilderness. Still, when it’s warm, people come, grab a coffee, and just hang out.
